Default help please

anybody know what this light means?

i was at a red light and in manual gear 1. I turned left to beat some traffic and the car shifted up by itself. the light came on and now the trans is stuck in manual 2nd or 3rd. I can put it in reverse and its fine but if I drive forward you can tell your stuck in a higher gear. Please, I dont need any "manual swap" comments,

I got that light once in my E90. I would imagine it means the same thing in E46's.

It put my trans in limp mode. I turned the car off and on within 30 seconds of it coming on and it went away. If it stays on, it means a fault code was stored and is staying in limp mode.

Unless its Red, you should be fine to drive on it to have the code checked out.

yep, like its been stated before your tranny went into a limp mode, its defiantly indicates problems with the transmission. if it stays on, it could be a number of things even a simple thing like the tps.
